Green Cleansing Smoothie

“Food is not just calories. It is information. Every bite sends a signal."

There is something deeply satisfying about starting your day with a glass of green food.

Green smoothies have earned their place in the wellness world for good reason and they've stayed there. What's in the glass, when you build it thoughtfully, is a genuinely extraordinary concentration of what your body uses to repair, protect, and energise itself.

Food is information. Every ingredient you choose sends a signal - to your cells, your hormones, your gut microbiome, your mood. This smoothie is one of my most reliable morning rituals, and the reason I keep returning to it is simple: I feel the difference on the days I have it.

Here's what's in it, and why it works.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup spinach or kale leaves

  • 1 cup romaine leaves

  • ½ cup cucumber, chopped

  • ½ cup celery, chopped

  • 1 small pear or green apple, chopped

  • 1 banana (frozen if you like it creamy)

  • 1 cup water or coconut water

  • 1–4 tbsp fresh mint

  • 1 tbsp parsley or cilantro

  • ½–1 lemon, juiced

  • ½ tbsp chia seeds

  • ¼-inch slice ginger root

  • 1 tbsp vegan protein powder (optional)

  • Pinch of cayenne, cinnamon, or turmeric (optional kick)

Add everything to a high-speed blender. Blend until completely smooth. Taste and adjust - a little more lemon if you want brightness, a drop of stevia if you want sweetness. Sip slowly. This is not a drink to rush.

Why It Works

The leafy greens - spinach, kale, romaine - are among the most nutrient-dense foods available. Rich in folate, iron, vitamin K, and chlorophyll, they support immune function, bone health, and the liver's natural detoxification pathways.

Cucumber and celery bring hydration and alkalising minerals, particularly potassium and sodium in their natural form. Cucumber has a mild anti-inflammatory effect and supports skin clarity from the inside out.

Banana provides natural sugars alongside magnesium and B6 both of which support nervous system regulation and steady energy. Frozen banana also gives the smoothie a texture that makes it feel genuinely satisfying rather than like something you're enduring.

Lemon juice is a small but meaningful addition. Vitamin C is essential for collagen synthesis, immune defence, and iron absorption. Adding it to a green smoothie significantly increases the bioavailability of the plant-based iron in the leafy greens.

Chia seeds contribute omega-3 fatty acids, soluble fibre, and protein. This is a combination that slows glucose absorption and keeps blood sugar stable for hours.

The herbs and spices do more than flavour. Parsley is rich in vitamin C and supports kidney function. Ginger is one of the most well-researched anti-inflammatory foods available. Cinnamon has a measurable effect on blood sugar regulation. Cayenne gently supports circulation and metabolism.

Together, this is a concentrated act of nourishment, the kind that compounds over time.

The HWell Takeaway

A green smoothie done well is hydrating, alkalising, anti-inflammatory, and genuinely energising - all before 9am. The act of choosing to start your day with something that nourishes you deeply sets a tone for everything that follows. Make it your ritual.

The simplest habits often hold the most power. This is one of them.

Stay vibrant, stay radiant.
