Chocolate Hemp Seed Porridge
A cozy, nourishing breakfast
On cold mornings, there is nothing quite like a warm bowl of porridge. And while smoothies have their place in the morning rotation, sometimes you want something cozy, spoon-worthy, and deeply satisfying. This is our go-to Chocolate Hemp Seed Porridge. And yes, chocolate for breakfast is as good an idea as it sounds.
It is creamy, nutrient-dense, grain-free, low glycaemic, and ready in ten minutes. Comfort food that genuinely loves you back.
Ingredients (Serves 2)
1 cup organic full-fat coconut milk (from the can)
1⅓ tbsp monk fruit sweetener (we love Lakanto)
1⅓ tbsp raw cacao powder
½ tsp vanilla extract
⅓ cup hemp seeds (~5 tbsp)
2 tbsp chia seeds
2 tsp unsweetened shredded coconut
2 tsp (or more) raw cacao nibs
½ cup strawberries (fresh or frozen)
Directions
Heat the coconut milk over medium heat until just before it bubbles. Stir in the monk fruit sweetener, cacao powder, and vanilla, whisking until completely smooth.
Reduce heat to low. Whisk in the hemp seeds and chia seeds. Stir regularly until the porridge thickens to your liking. Add a splash of extra coconut milk or water if it becomes too thick.
Transfer to bowls and top with shredded coconut, cacao nibs, and strawberries. In cherry season, swap the strawberries for fresh cherries - equally beautiful, equally good.
Enjoy immediately, or refrigerate for up to three days. Reheat gently with a splash of coconut milk, or eat it chilled. It works both ways.
Variations
For extra warmth, add a pinch of ground cinnamon. If coconut milk isn't your preference, unsweetened almond milk or hemp milk work beautifully in its place.
Why This Bowl Loves You Back
Hemp seeds are one of the more impressive foods in the plant world. They are a complete plant protein containing all nine essential amino acids, along with an ideal ratio of omega-3 to omega-6 fatty acids, magnesium, zinc, and iron. Hemp seeds are associated with cardiovascular support, skin health, and digestive balance.
Chia seeds bring soluble fibre that feeds the gut microbiome and slows glucose absorption, keeping energy stable across the morning. They are also a rich source of ALA (alpha-linolenic acid), a plant-based omega-3 fatty acid linked to brain and immune health.
Strawberries deliver vitamin C, folate, potassium, and a broad spectrum of phenolic compounds - including anthocyanins and ellagic acid - that are associated with anti-inflammatory and cardiovascular protective effects. Research also points to the anthocyanins in berries as supportive of eye health over time.
Raw cacao is one of the most antioxidant-dense foods in the plant kingdom. It is particularly rich in flavanols, which support circulation, heart health, and cognitive function. Cacao in its raw form is also an outstanding source of magnesium and plant-based iron. Beyond minerals, cacao contains phenylethylamine, anandamide, and theobromine - compounds that interact with the brain's mood and pleasure pathways - as well as tryptophan, a precursor to serotonin. Which is to say: there is genuine biochemistry behind why chocolate makes you feel good.
This is more than just a porridge. It is a warm, energising, mood-supporting ritual in a bowl.
